Adam Levine was one of the coaches on NBC's The Voice for the first 16 seasons of the singing competition show before he made his departure from the series. Now, the Maroon 5 singer is coming back to the coaches chairs for season 27 -- but he says it's not a competition series.
Why did Adam Levine leave The Voice?
There was a lot of speculation about what lead to Adam Levine choosing to leave The Voice after 16 seasons, but the "She Will Be Loved" singer shared that the real reason was his family. On an episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Adam Levine said that he chose to step away from coaching on The Voice in order to focus on his wife and children and spend more time with them.
"I was just constantly working for so many years -- very lucky, very fortunate, very blessed and all that -- but to just be able to stop in this moment to spend time with my new young family and just have the greatest time ever. Now I'm just, like, a stay-at-home dad," the father of three shared on the talk show.
Throughout his time on The Voice, Adam Levine was a constant alongside Blake Shelton who left the show after season 23, while he saw many coaches and part-time advisors come and go. He sat in the coaches' chairs alongside Christina Aguilera, Miley Cyrus, Gwen Stefani, and many other iconic names in the music world.
In an exclusive interview with E! News, he said that he felt like the time was finally right to return to The Voice for season 27. Just like he said that it just felt like the right time to step away from the singing competition show in order to spend time with his family after season 16, he said that it felt like the right time to come back for season 27.
He told E! News, "I was ready to do it, then the stars aligned and here I am."
Adam will be sitting in the coaches' chairs alongside John Legend, Michael Buble, and Kelsea Ballerini.
Adam Levine says The Voice isn't a competition series
Even though The Voice is considered a singing competition series to many with competitors like Cassadee Pope, Morgan Wallen, and Melanie Martinez going on to see major success in the music world after appearing on the show, Adam Levine says that's not how he sees the show now.
"I don't really see it as a competition anymore, and I know they're not going to like that, but that's not what it is. It's an opportunity for us to share our experiences with the people on the show. And it always has been that," Adam Levine shared in an interview with PEOPLE.
Even though he's not coming back to season 27 of The Voice to compete against the other coaches, he's still excited to share his experience in the music world with the singers that he takes onto his team.
He told the publication, "I don't see it as a competition and I don't think that I can bring anything other than what I have just from life and a career. And I think that's really valuable for the people on the show that are needing that experience, or that push that help."
