1. Outlast (Netflix)
Outlast is a Netflix original reality series that has two seasons. The show follows survivalists that are tasked with working together on teams in the Alaskan wilderness to outlast the other teams in order to win a prize of $1 million. Players have to make sure their teams have at least two people, but they're able to vote players out of their teams and force them to either try to join another team or be eliminated from the game.
2. Extracted (FOX)
Extracted is a new, unique survival reality show from FOX that premiered in February 2025. The show puts ill-prepared survivalists in the Canadian wilderness while their family members watch on a camera feed from a control room and are entirely in charge of their circumstances, including supply drops and whether or not the survivors continue on in the game with family members in sole control of the button that will take the contestants out of the game.
3. Alone (History)
Having first premiered on History in 2015, Alone is a long-running survival reality TV series that follows a group of competing survivalists that are alone (with the exception of season 4 in which they were put into teams of two) in the wilderness and tasked with surviving longer than their fellow survivalists in order to win a cash prize at the end of the season. Contestants are given a limited number of survival supplies and are able to "tap out" for any reason if things get too tough.
4. Naked and Afraid (Discovery)
Since 2013, Naked and Afraid on Discovery has paired up teams of survivalists who are (literally) stripped of everything except one item of their choosing and sent into the wilderness for 21 days to try to survive and are tasked with finding food, building shelter, and starting a fire. Unlike other survival series, Naked and Afraid shows each pair's journey in a single episode.
5. Survivor (CBS)
It's impossible to mention survival-based reality TV shows without mentioning the one that put the genre on the map: Survivor.
