RHONY: Fans think Brynn Whitfield went too far
By Lacey Womack
Season 14 of The Real Housewives of New York was the franchise's first ever reboot and newcomer to the series Brynn Whitfield was originally a fan favorite. But the latest episodes of the series saw Brynn leaning into being the villain of the season and fans have gone from loving the fresh face to thinking she went too far.
Over the course of only a couple episodes, RHONY's Brynn Whitfield has gone from being a favorite new housewife to being called out all over social media for being "miserable," being a "mean girl," and even for some petty grievances like leaving Jessel's birthday party to go get a spray tan.
While some of the things that Brynn Whitfield is being called out by RHONY fans for are more serious than others, one of the most serious issues that fans have taken with the most recent episodes has been the way that she speaks to and about Ubah Hassan.
What did Brynn Whitfield say about Ubah Hassan?
In a recent episode, Brynn Whitfield is seen during a confessional scene recalling a confession that she had with Ubah Hassan about wanting Oliver to "want to marry [her]." During the confessional, Brynn says, "I don't want you coming off like this, as an angry Black woman, you know?"
Many viewers were quick to point out that the stereotype of the "angry Black woman" is a long-standing and harmful stereotype that has been used against Black women who don't make their emotions palatable enough for the people around them and are immediately seen as being aggressive and angry for standing up for themselves or expressing their thoughts.
Fans think that as a white-passing biracial woman, Brynn Whitfield should know better than to weaponize this stereotype against Ubah Hassan, especially in reference to Oliver "wanting" to marry her.
Brynn Whitfield caught extra backlash after she was seen mocking Ubah Hassan's accent directly to Jessel Taank with many fans pointing out that Brynn had previously told Ubah not to mock her.
Will Brynn Whitfield continue playing the villain role in this season of RHONY? Will fans continue to turn on her bad behavior? Only time will tell. The Real Housewives of New York airs every Tuesday at 9/8c on Bravo with the episodes available on Peacock the following day.
